Quick Answer
The Vineyard: Local News Mini-Expansion adds 20 event cards that introduce random challenges and bonuses to the Paperwork action, shaking up your strategy each game.
What makes Local News different from other expansions?
Unlike expansions that add new actions or components, Local News focuses on unpredictability. Each game, you'll draw news cards that might help or hinder your plans, forcing you to adapt on the fly. This keeps the core winemaking mechanics intact while adding a layer of variable challenge.
Is it compatible with the base game only?
Yes, the Local News Mini-Expansion is designed for Vineyard: The Winemaking Game. It does not require any other expansions. However, you can mix it with other mini-expansions for more variety, as long as you follow the recommended card limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What comes in the box?
- The expansion contains 20 local news cards and a rules sheet. No other components are included.
- How do the news cards work?
- During the Paperwork action, you draw a news card and resolve its effect. Effects can give bonuses (like extra resources) or impose challenges (like losing a worker for a round). The card is then discarded. Read the rules sheet carefully for timing and resolution order.
- Can I remove cards I don't like?
- Yes, the rules allow you to customize the deck. If a card feels too punishing or too weak, simply remove it. This is a common house rule for variable expansions. Start with the full deck, then adjust after a few plays.
- Does it add much playtime?
- No. Resolving a news card takes about 30 seconds per draw. The overall game length stays roughly the same, though some events might speed up or slow down certain strategies.
- Is it worth the price?
- At $3.49 (down from $4.99), it's a low-cost way to add replayability. If you enjoy variable game states and adapting to random events, it's a good buy. If you prefer a tightly balanced experience without luck, you may skip it.
